What could be wrong with my dogs ear?

I took my husky for a walk today and all of a sudden he started shaking his head and itching his ear...then as I took him inside and all day on and off he keeps shaking his head and itching his ear...I tried looking inside and cleaning it and nothing helped. Any idea if its serious or if a bug could be deep inside?
