My iPod Chromatic's buttons won't work?

My iPod Chromatic is 8 GBs and I think I got it at Christmas year 2008-2009? It's the kind that changes songs when you shake it. Anyways, it's pretty old, the scroll circle doesn't work and neither do the buttons. The only way I can even see anything is if I lock then unlock it. I've tried resetting it millions of times but it doesn't do any good. If I plug it into a computer I can still put songs on it but I can't listen to anything because I can't use my buttons.I'm asking this question because my dad refuses to buy me a new one unless he knows this one is 100% broken. So, any ideas?
